My Next Game Project – Progress #2

Irrlicht 1.3.1 is really fast!

On my previous post (Progress #1), I did a performance test, putting as many enemies as possible on the screen until the frame rate drops. The result was bad because I ended up with only 20 enemies on the screen. Putting 30 enemies lowered the frame rate from 60 to 30 fps.

But then, I downloaded the latest Irrlicht 1.3.1 (I used version 1.3 before) and compiled the same source code. The result was amazing. I got 30 enemies on the screen with frame rate 60 fps  !!

So I raised the number of enemies to 40. The frame rate was still 60 fps!! Then I tried 50. It’s still 60 fps  but not that stabile. Sometimes, it went down to 30 – 40 fps. So the most stabile is 45 enemies on the screen :)

Pretty impressive!! I mean from 25 to 45, that’s 80% improvement  So, will I stick using 3D for my next shmup? Yes, but only for the game world or the stages. I will use 2D sprites for the characters and the bullets.

Hiro (green-haired dude in the middle): Oh crap!!

Right now, I am not sure how I am going to manage my time making this game. I just started doing my master thesis (which I’ve abandoned since November last year :( ). I need to graduate fast so I can find a job outside Europe.

Ahh, I think I worry too much

  1. You have a very refreshing style here, I really hope you can find the time to finish this. Let me know as soon as I can play a demo ;)

Oh, and school’s important! Finish that too :)

    Bill

  2. Thanks Bill :) I’ll let you know when the demo is ready ;)

This time I’ll make sure I’ll finish my thesis on time

Nice style, waiting to see more … and why a job outside Europe? and what are you thinking of doing cool for you master?

  3. Right now, I only apply for a job in Europe because of my thesis. Applying outside Europe will increase my chance of getting accepted, especially in US, where the game industry is much bigger than in Europe. That’s all :) Actually, I prefer working in Europe :)

BTW, the style is not final yet. I just use the characters from my previous games, Tokusatsu Agent. For this shmup game, I’ll design another one.

  1. No trackbacks yet.
